How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.

Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.

Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.

Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Sex
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.

Edge Support
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.

My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
