This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Where Can I Try A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
