In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is very cooling and supportive. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Where Can I See A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
