This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. What Is The Purple Mattress
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! What Is The Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. What Is The Purple Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. What Is The Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. What Is The Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. What Is The Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. What Is The Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. What Is The Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. What Is The Purple Mattress
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. What Is The Purple Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. What Is The Purple Mattress
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. What Is The Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. What Is The Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. What Is The Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.

Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
