Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches.
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Try Out Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Try Out Purple Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Try Out Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Try Out Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Try Out Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Try Out Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Try Out Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Try Out Purple Mattress
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Try Out Purple Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Try Out Purple Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Try Out Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Try Out Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Try Out Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
