In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. The Original Purple Mattress
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! The Original Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. The Original Purple Mattress
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. The Original Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. The Original Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. The Original Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. The Original Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. The Original Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. The Original Purple Mattress
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. The Original Purple Mattress
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. The Original Purple Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. The Original Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. The Original Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. The Original Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
