This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Test Purple Mattress In Store
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Test Purple Mattress In Store
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Test Purple Mattress In Store
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Test Purple Mattress In Store
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Test Purple Mattress In Store
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Test Purple Mattress In Store

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses
The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.

Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?
Purple mattresses are manufactured in the USA.

No, Purple does not recommend using a box spring with any of their beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Test Purple Mattress In Store
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
