Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Test A Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Test A Purple Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Test A Purple Mattress

Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Test A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Test A Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Test A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Test A Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Test A Purple Mattress
Sex
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Test A Purple Mattress
Edge Support
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Test A Purple Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Test A Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Test A Purple Mattress

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses
The only difference is how much Purple Grid each mattress is made of.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 3 have layers of 2-inch grid, 3-inch grid, and 4 inch grid, respectively.
Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?
All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.
Can I use the Purple Hybrid Mattresses with a Box Spring?
Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Test A Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
