Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.

Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.

How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.

Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.

Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.

Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.

Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.

Sex
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.

Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.

What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is very cooling and supportive. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.

Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.

Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.

I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern.
