Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Rotate Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Rotate Purple Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Rotate Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Rotate Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Rotate Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Rotate Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Rotate Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Rotate Purple Mattress
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Rotate Purple Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Rotate Purple Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Rotate Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Rotate Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Rotate Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
