This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Real Purple Mattress Reviews

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 2-inch grid grid layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 3-inch grid Layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 4 uses a 4-inch grid Layer.
Where are Purple mattresses manufactured?
Purple mattresses are manufactured in the USA.
Can I use a mattress box with Purple Hybrids?
Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Real Purple Mattress Reviews
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
