We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Queen Size Mattress
To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Queen Size Mattress
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Purple Queen Size Mattress
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Queen Size Mattress
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Queen Size Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Queen Size Mattress

Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?

Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Queen Size Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
