In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Pillow Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Pillow Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Purple Pillow Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Pillow Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Pillow Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Pillow Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Pillow Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Pillow Mattress
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Pillow Mattress
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Pillow Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Pillow Mattress
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Pillow Mattress

Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Pillow Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
