In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Original Mattress
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Original Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Original Mattress
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Original Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Original Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Original Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Original Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Original Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Original Mattress
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Original Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Original Mattress
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is very cooling and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Original Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Can I use a boxspring with Purple Hybrid mattresses
Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They suggest using a solid platform base, slatted bed frame, or adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Original Mattress
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
