In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Xl Twin

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses
The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.
The original Purple Hybrid has a 2-inch grid layer, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has a 3-inch grid layer, and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has a 4-inch grid layer.
Where are Purple mattresses made?
All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

Purple does not recommend the use of a boxspring in any of their beds.

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Xl Twin
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
