Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches.
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle

Where are Purple mattresses manufactured?
Purple mattresses made in America.

Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.
They suggest using a solid platform base, slatted bed frame, or adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
