We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Vs Latex

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Vs Latex
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
