We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Vs Casper

All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Vs Casper
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
