In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches.
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Toxic
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Toxic
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Purple Mattress Toxic
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Toxic
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Toxic
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Toxic
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Toxic
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Toxic
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Purple Mattress Toxic
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Purple Mattress Toxic
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Toxic
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Toxic

There is only one difference between these two mattresses: the amount of Purple Grid they are made with.
The original Purple Hybrid has a 2-inch grid layer, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has a 3-inch grid layer, and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has a 4-inch grid layer.
Where are Purple mattress made?
Purple mattresses made in America.
Can I use a boxspring with Purple Hybrid mattresses
Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Toxic
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
