We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? Purple Mattress Single
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Single
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Single
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Single
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Single
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Single
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Single
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Single
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Single
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Single
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Single
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is very cooling and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Single
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Single

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Single
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
