In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Showroom
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches.
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Showroom
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Showroom
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Showroom
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Showroom
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Showroom
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Showroom
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Showroom
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Showroom
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Showroom
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Purple Mattress Showroom
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Showroom
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Mattress Showroom

Where are Purple mattress made?
Purple mattresses are made in the USA.
Can I use a box spring with the Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Purple recommends not using a boxspring with any of their beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Showroom
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
