We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? Purple Mattress Sheets
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Sheets
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Sheets
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Sheets
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Sheets
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Sheets
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Sheets
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Sheets
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Sheets
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Sheets
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Sheets
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Mattress Sheets
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Sheets

What’s the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and original Purple Hybrid mattresses?
The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.
The original Purple Hybrid has a 2-inch grid layer, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has a 3-inch grid layer, and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has a 4-inch grid layer.
Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?
Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.
Can I use a mattress box with Purple Hybrids?
Purple does not recommend the use of a boxspring in any of their beds.
They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Sheets
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
