Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.

How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.

Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.

Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Sasquatch Actor
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Sex
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.

Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.

What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.

Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
