In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Sample
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Mattress Sample
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Sample
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Sample
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Sample
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Sample
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Sample
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Sample
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Sample
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Sample
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Sample
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Sample
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Sample

What is the main difference between Purple Hybrid Premier or the original Purple Hybrid mattress?
The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has an original 2-inch grid layer. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches grid layers. The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches grid layers.
Where are Purple mattresses made?
All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.
Can I use a boxspring with Purple Hybrid mattresses
No, Purple does not recommend using a box spring with any of their beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Sample
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
