In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches.
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Review Heavy Person
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
