We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?

Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches

As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.

Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.

People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.

These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.

These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.

Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.

One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses

Purple Mattress Review Consumer ReportsNext, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.

As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.

Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.

Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.

Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.

Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.

Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4

Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)

Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.

Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.

Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?

Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.

Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.

Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).

Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance

Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. I use a pressure map to check for this.

Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.

The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.

Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.

Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples

Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.

I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.

The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.

Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Sex

Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.

Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.

But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.

Cooling

The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.

All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.

This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Edge Support

Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.

All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.

Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?

Let’s find out what these beds look like! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.

Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.

Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.

Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

A look at the Purple Grid.

Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.

Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing

Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.

Let’s get to the bottom of this review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.

Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.

I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.

I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints

The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.

However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses

The only difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple Grid each is made with.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 2-inch grid grid layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 3-inch grid Layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 4 uses a 4-inch grid Layer.

Where are Purple mattresses made?

Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.

Can I use a boxspring with Purple Hybrid mattresses

Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.

They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.

Purple Hybrid Vs.

Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.

But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.

For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.

Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.

The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple

The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.

The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.

The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
