How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.

Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4

Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.

Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Referral
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.

Motion Transfer
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.

Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.

Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.

What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
