In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should fade within a few days.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test

What is the difference between the original Purple Hybrid mattress and the Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses?
The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is 2-inch thick, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is 3-inch, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4 is 4-inch.
Where are Purple Mattresses Made?
Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.
Can I use a boxspring with Purple Hybrid mattresses
Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They recommend using a platform base, adjustable base or slatted beds frames.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Raw Egg Test
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
