We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch

Purple Hybrids Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Protector Sasquatch
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
