In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches.
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Pillows
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Mattress Pillows
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Pillows
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Pillows
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Pillows
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Pillows
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Pillows
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Pillows
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
Personal opinion: I find the Purple Hybrids a bit too lively to share if one is a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Pillows
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Pillows
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress Pillows
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Pillows

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Pillows
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
