This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Pads
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Pads
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Pads
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Pads
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Pads
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Pads
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Pads
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Pads

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
