This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Owner
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.

Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Owner
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Owner
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Purple Mattress Owner
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Owner
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Owner
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Owner
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Owner
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Owner
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Owner
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Owner
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is very cooling and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Mattress Owner
Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Owner
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Owner

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Owner
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
