Purple Mattress Not Expanding – Our Purple Hybrid Mattress Review 2021

In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?

Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches

Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.

Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.

Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.

The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.

These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.

Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.

You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?

Purple Mattress Not ExpandingNext, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.

As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.

The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.

Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.

Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.

Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4

Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)

Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.

The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.

Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?

Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.

Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.

Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).

Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.

Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief

Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.

Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.

The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.

Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.

Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.

Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples

Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.

I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.

The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.

Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Sex

A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.

The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.

They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.

Cooling

All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.

All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.

This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Edge Support

Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.

All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.

Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?

Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.

Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.

Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.

Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.

A look at the Purple Grid.

Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.

Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.

The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.

Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.

I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.

The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints

I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.

However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses

The only difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple Grid each is made with.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 3 have layers of 2-inch grid, 3-inch grid, and 4 inch grid, respectively.

Where are Purple mattresses made?

All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

Can I use the Purple Hybrid Mattresses with a Box Spring?

Purple recommends not using a boxspring with any of their beds.

These experts recommend using a solid platform, slatted or adjustable bed frame.

Purple Hybrid Vs.

After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.

But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.

The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.

Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.

The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Not Expanding

Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple

Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.

Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.

The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
