We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? Purple Mattress Memory Foam
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Memory Foam

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Memory Foam
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
