In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Macys
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Macys
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Macys
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Macys
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Macys
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Macys
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Macys
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Macys
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Macys
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Macys
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Mattress Macys

Where are Purple Mattresses Made?
Purple mattresses made in America.

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Macys
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
