Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.

How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Futon
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Futon
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Futon
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.

Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Futon

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Futon
Sex
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.

Edge Support
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.

What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.

I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern.
