We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is very cooling and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating

Where are Purple mattress made?
Purple mattresses are manufactured in the USA.

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Firmness Rating
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
