In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Firm
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Firm
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Firm
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Firm
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Firm
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Firm
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Firm
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Firm
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Firm
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Firm
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Firm
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Firm
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Firm

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Firm
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
