We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches.
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

They suggest using a solid platform base, slatted bed frame, or adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Expansion Time
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
