This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is very cooling and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Dimensions King

Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Dimensions King
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
