In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Cover Replacement
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
