This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. There is only one difference between these two mattresses: the amount of Purple Grid they are made with.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has an original 2-inch grid layer. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches grid layers. The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches grid layers.
Where are Purple mattresses made?
All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

Purple does not recommend the use of a boxspring in any of their beds.
These experts recommend using a solid platform, slatted or adjustable bed frame.
Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Cover Commercial
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
