We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Purple Mattress Careers
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Careers
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Mattress Careers
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Careers
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Careers
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Careers
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Careers
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Careers
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Careers
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Careers
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Careers
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Purple Mattress Careers
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress Careers

Purple Hybrids Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Careers
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
