We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Purple Mattress Break In Period
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Break In Period
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Break In Period
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Break In Period
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Break In Period
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Break In Period
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Mattress Break In Period

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Break In Period
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
