We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Back Pain
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Back Pain
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Back Pain
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Back Pain
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Purple Mattress Back Pain
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress Back Pain
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Back Pain

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Back Pain
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
