How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.

Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.

Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Sex
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
Cooling
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.

Edge Support
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.

What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.

Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses.
