Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?

Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches

The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.

Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.

Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.

The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.

Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Advertisement

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.

Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.

You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Advertisement

How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?

Purple Mattress AdvertisementLet’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.

As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.

Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.

Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.

Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.

Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4

Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds felt more like “on top” than “in”, and it was easy to switch positions during the night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?

Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.

Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.

Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?

Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.

Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).

Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.

Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance

Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. A pressure map is a great way to test this.

Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.

Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.

Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.

Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples

Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.

I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.

The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.

Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Sex

A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.

My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.

If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.

Cooling

All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.

Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.

This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Edge Support

Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.

All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.

Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Mattress Advertisement

What is the Purple Hybrid?

Let’s find out what these beds look like! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.

Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.

Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.

Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.

The Purple Grid.

Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.

Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing

Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.

The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.

Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.

I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.

The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Advertisement

My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints

I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.

I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses

Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?

Purple mattresses made in America.

Can I use a mattress box with Purple Hybrids?

Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.

They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.

Purple Hybrid vs.

Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.

However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.

The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.

Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.

The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Advertisement

Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple

Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.

The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.

The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
