In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Ads
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Ads
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Ads
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Ads
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Ads
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Ads
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Ads
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Ads
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Ads
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Ads
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Ads
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Mattress Ads
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress Ads

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Ads
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
