We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Purple Egg Mattress
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will probably enjoy the supportive feeling of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Egg Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. Purple Egg Mattress
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Egg Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Egg Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Egg Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Egg Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Egg Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Egg Mattress
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Egg Mattress
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Egg Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. Purple Egg Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Egg Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Egg Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
