We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? Purple Com Mattress
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Com Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Com Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Com Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Purple Com Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Com Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Com Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based purely on these pressure maps, the original Purple Hybrid was found to be the best mattress for those with back problems. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Com Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Com Mattress
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Com Mattress
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Com Mattress
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
The Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Com Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Com Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Com Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
